Teaching Philosophy
I believe that every student has an artistic voice worth developing. My role as a teacher is to help students discover that voice while giving them the knowledge, technique, and musical understanding to express it with confidence and excellence.
Music does not exist in isolation. Every piece has a history, a culture, and a set of ideas behind it, and I believe students gain a deeper understanding of music when they learn to consider those contexts alongside the notes on the page. Lessons may therefore encompass technique and repertoire alongside music theory, history, listening, and the broader traditions that shape the music we play.
I take a holistic approach to musical education. While I maintain high standards and expect students to take their work seriously, I do not believe there is a single path to becoming a musician. Each student brings different interests, experiences, strengths, and goals to the instrument, and I tailor my teaching accordingly. The greatest joy in teaching comes when a student begins to recognize themselves in the music they make.
Ultimately, I want students to leave lessons with more than the ability to play the guitar. I want them to become thoughtful, independent, and empowered musicians who can listen critically, make artistic decisions, and find meaning in music for themselves.
“Zach is, of course, an accomplished and skilled guitarist, with years of professional experience. This is only to be expected from a teacher. But Zach also loves to teach. He has an inexhaustible supply of patience for all students. Never will he criticize a student, but only suggest a better approach to the music. He chooses pieces with care, to emphasize a particular area that needs attention. He combines easy-going friendliness with scrupulous attention to the student and the music. I’ve been a student of Zach’s for over three years now, and I think I made a wonderful choice.”
Dr. Zachary Grim brings more than two decades of experience as a performer and educator. He holds a DMA in Guitar Performance and an MM in Musicology from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and currently serves as Chair of the Music Department and Director of Bands and Guitar at the McLean School. His students have earned top prizes in statewide and national competitions and have gone on to study at institutions including Peabody, Oberlin, NYU, Belmont, and the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
“Zach is an amazing instructor—incredibly knowledgable, dedicated, and experienced, and he makes himself available over text and email to answer questions between lessons. He really helped me with breaking down challenges into small, discrete skills. Would absolutely recommend whether you’re an absolute beginner or an experienced player looking for more training.”
Who I Teach
Beginners: Establish a strong musical and technical foundation while developing a relationship with the instrument.
Intermediate Students: Build technique, expand repertoire, and develop greater musical independence.
Advanced Students: Prepare for auditions, competitions, performances, or continued study at the collegiate/conservatory level.
Adult Students: Serious musicianship for adults who want to explore the guitar, return to an instrument, or pursue a long-standing musical interest.
“Zachary is an excellent and dedicated guitar teacher and musician. I recently started taking lessons with him and I am very pleased. He is accessible for questions outside of class, explains things very clearly, tailors the lessons to my abilities, and is a nice guy. My highest recommendations!”
